What is pool chemical balancing, and what does it involve?
Chemical balancing is the work of keeping six interdependent water measurements inside their safe ranges so that the sanitizer can actually do its job. Those measurements are pH, free chlorine, combined chlorine, total alkalinity, calcium hardness and cyanuric acid. They are interdependent rather than independent, which is why adding chlorine to a pool with the wrong pH often does nothing: above roughly pH 8 most of the chlorine present is in a form that barely sanitizes. Total alkalinity is what stops pH swinging in the first place, so it is usually corrected before pH rather than after.
Two of these matter more in San Diego than in most places. Inland water is hard, so calcium hardness climbs on its own and shows up as scale on the tile line and inside the heater. And cyanuric acid, the stabilizer that stops sunlight destroying chlorine, accumulates quietly with every stabilised product added, until the only way down is dilution. We test all six weekly and record the readings in the visit report, so a drift is visible over time instead of becoming a problem you notice as cloudy water.

pH Level (7.2-7.8)
The most important factor. Too low causes eye irritation, equipment corrosion, and etching. Too high makes chlorine ineffective and causes scale buildup. We maintain the ideal range for comfort and equipment protection.
Total Alkalinity (80-120 ppm)
Acts as a pH buffer, preventing rapid pH swings. Stabilizing alkalinity first makes pH easier to manage and maintain. This is often overlooked but crucial for water balance.
Chlorine (1-3 ppm)
Your pool's sanitizer, killing bacteria and preventing algae. Too little allows algae and bacteria growth. Too much causes skin/eye irritation and bleaches swimwear. We maintain the ideal sanitizer level.
Calcium Hardness (200-400 ppm)
Prevents plaster etching (too low) or scale formation (too high). Especially important in San Diego where tap water often has high calcium. We monitor and adjust as needed.
Cyanuric Acid (30-50 ppm)
Protects chlorine from sunlight degradation. Think of it as sunscreen for your chlorine. Too little and chlorine burns off quickly. Too much and chlorine becomes less effective.
